The Complete eCommerce Checklist for Beginners: Everything You Need Before Launch

Why a Checklist Matters Before You Launch
Most ecommerce stores fail not because the product is wrong, but because the store was not ready when the first visitor arrived. A slow checkout, missing trust signals, a broken mobile layout, or a confusing product description can turn a potential buyer into a bounce in under 10 seconds. A pre-launch checklist prevents this from happening to you.
Store Setup Checklist
- Domain connected and SSL active: Your store must show https:// in the browser. Shopify provides free SSL — make sure it is enabled in your domain settings.
- Store name and logo in place: First impressions matter. Have a clean, professional logo in the header and a name that matches your brand.
- Favicon set: Small detail, big professionalism signal. Upload a simple favicon in Shopify Settings — Online Store — Themes.
- Currency and payment methods configured: Shopify Payments, PayPal, and Shop Pay should all be active before you run any traffic.
- Shipping rates set up: Nothing kills conversions faster than unexpected shipping costs at checkout. Define your rates clearly — free shipping thresholds work especially well.
- Policies added: Refund policy, privacy policy, and terms of service. Shopify can generate templates under Settings — Policies.
Product Page Checklist
- High-quality images: At least 3 to 5 images per product. Include lifestyle shots showing the product in use, not just white-background studio photos.
- Compelling product description: Answer these questions: What does it do? Who is it for? Why should someone buy it today? Keep paragraphs short and use bullet points for features.
- Clear CTA button: Add to Cart or Buy Now should be visible above the fold without scrolling on mobile. Test this on your own phone.
- Product reviews section: Install a free reviews app before launch. Even a few early reviews dramatically increase conversion rate.
- Urgency or scarcity element: Low stock indicators, countdown timers for limited offers, or free shipping thresholds all help push hesitant buyers to act.
Before Running Ads Checklist
- Meta Pixel installed: Install the Facebook and Instagram pixel before spending a single dollar. Without it you cannot track conversions or optimize campaigns.
- Google Analytics 4 connected: Free, essential, and takes under 10 minutes to set up. You need data from day one.
- Thank you page configured: After purchase, customers should see a clear confirmation page. Consider adding an upsell or review request here.
- Abandoned cart email set up: This alone can recover 10 to 15 percent of lost sales. Set it up in Klaviyo or Shopify Email before launching ads.
- Mobile experience tested: Over 70 percent of ecommerce traffic is mobile. Walk through the entire purchase flow on your smartphone and fix any friction points.
